I have so many new artists backed up to share with you guys. Will I ever get them all posted? Who knows. Without school, I've had more time to look into current design again (the irony isn't lost on me), and it's been so inspiring! Call me a nerd, but I swear, there's nothing more relaxing or invigorating than discovering good design. It's for discoveries such as these that the internet becomes my most generous ally. I picked one of the lesser known artists to post first. I actually just bumped into his work a few weeks ago myself, so I'm as new as you.

Jonas Bruntenbruch stands out to me for two little words: daily design. This concept is beaten into us at SCAD, but very few learn to accept or follow it (if you're a SCAD reader: TAKE JOHN WATERS; he teaches this concept brilliantly). In the words of my Vector Raster professor this quarter, "being a designer is a twenty-four seven job; we never punch out, we never stop taking in concepts and ideas." I couldn't agree more. It's my belief that good design doesn't come from fancy degrees or expensive educations, but the lesson of learning how to view the world with a creative approach. Our art should be a reflection of everything we've learned, everything we know, everything we see. That's why it's so important that artists stay awake--truly awake--to take in the intricate world around them. We have to be aware of everything from Glaser's famous posters to wood grain to the color of the back of our eyelids when hit by direct light. It all adds up; it all counts.

WHAT JONAS HAS NICKNAMED CREATIVE MASTURBATION )

Outside of kick-ass designers, Apple's running their "buy a Mac and get a free iPod" deal again. Guh, I want that new iMac (and the touch; oh, touch, how I would touch you all over) so bad, it keeps chanting wantwantwant in my brain... but I want my trip to Maine even more. Shiny gadgets will have to wait their turn. So will that third season of The 4400 and Newton Faulker's full CD.

p.s. Listening to Imogen's 'Just For Now' live version is my most cherished and common spiritual experience.

p.p.s. EDIT: I almost forgot the most awkward moment of my day today: There was an ADT guy at the apartment installing our new security system this afternoon. As I'm signing the twelve hundredth form so he can finally leave (he was there for FIVE hours), he looks up at the wall over our kitchen table and goes, "Who's that?" I follow his eyes to the 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper where Robert SexAss Pattinson is staring down at us in all his pixel-y, printed glory. My response: "Ah... ha ha ha... our celebrity crush..." This was followed by an extended period of silence while they both continued to stare me down. MY ADVICE TO YOU: do not hang a giant photo of RPattz in your kitchen unless you are prepared to be questioned and/or judged. Lesson learned.

Right now, I really want a cupcake. Badly.

Now that I've said that and it's out of the way (but not my cravings, dammitt!), I want to share a great little video I found at GraphicDesignBar this morning. It's one of those projects that you sit and stare in awe at, all the while thinking, "I could do this. Why didn't I think of this?" Ze Frank would probably blame it on the brain crack (if you don't know who Ze Frank is, please google 'ze frank brain crack' and have a good laugh on me). Anyways, watch and enjoy while I continue this head-bashing-against-wall movement commonly recognized as studying for finals.

Don't you want to do this with your own kids now?

I recently got a complaint that while I constantly discuss being an art student, I never share any of my work. This is mostly because I'm still learning, and what might impress my professor may not be that impressive to you guys, simply because it's impossible for you as an audience to judge the growth. However, I realize you can appreciate "the pretty," so to compromise, I'm sharing my latest "pretty" Typography I project (with a bonus at the end). I'm curious to see what you guys have to say, so please discuss!

Christmas is now officially gone at Apartment B. We've packed away the snowflakes, stuffed the tree back into a box, and stole all the hooks from the ornaments. I do realize we probably should have carried out this process, oh, you know, back in late December, but it doesn't matter. It's over now.

I've never been one to get on LJ the day of Christmas and make a gigantic inventory list of everything I received, but this year I can't help but brag about one of my lovely gifts (not that it is anymore lovely than the rest, they were all special (thank you, thank you!)).

The Lost Key )

It's in a beautiful driftwood frame, hanging over my studio table.

I started all my new classes last week. This quarter I'm in History of Graphic Design, Typography I, and Fiction Writing I (yes, that's right, I've finally finished all the pre-req's and started my minor). It's nice to be back, but the studio work is already insane, and I'm only a week in. I'll be a busy bee, there's no doubting that...

This weekend has been so unbelievably busy. I've finally broken out of my shell and started driving around Savvy. I push forward on yield lights and stop just before the crosswalk and do all those nasty, city-driver type things so I fit in. It makes my life ten times easier because now I can shoot down Abercorn instead of having to walk over to the marketplace. Applause for me.

Yesterday I drove Lauren and I out to the swanky park on Abercorn in front of the "million dollar homes" (one of them has concrete carvings along the outside walls of their house, it's absolutely gorgeous) to do a photoshoot for my 2-D Design Final. Our final project is to design a band poster for a fictitious band, the name chosen from a list the professor had made up. My band name is Forgive and Forget and my bio basically details a pop-punk band (shocker) with a female lead (yeah, I know, I really broke out of my box--- NOT). Think Superchic[k] or Saving Jane, not The Subways. My design sketches were all based around positive-negative relationships, give and take, push and pull. The critique went well for me but I was more nervous than I would have liked. We had to present our sketches and bio to the class in a "sell your stuff, honey" fashion, meaning I really had to believe in my own ideas and convey that to the class. It's real world, I get it, but it doesn't mean I enjoyed it any more. Anyways, the class took well to my ideas from what I could tell and Szatmary confirmed that no matter which sketch I put into reality, I'd end up in a good place. Text placement is one of my strong points and I think I portrayed that well in my presentation. The photoshoot with Lauren was funny. I get into so many crazy positions while shooting and I think it threw her off at first. Not to mention, we had a really hard time making everything like "natural" and not like I'd just said, "Lauren, move your hand to the left." I got some great shots, though, check under the cut in you're interested.

HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT )

I stopped by Image is Everything and had my final poster printed today. It's nice but I think they screwed me over on the contrast a tad. However, I like the composition and the text placement, though mediocre, should slide by with passing marks. I had to photoshop all the cracks and leaves off of the sidewalk. It took forever but I really enjoyed doing it. I'm glad she gave us the opportunity to break into our comfort-mediums.

Last night Laur and I went to see Happy Feet (read: Harry Potter trailer) and were utterly shocked by two things. One, the lack of a kids movie, and two, the amazing graphics. And did anyone else think that the little girl behind the glass slightly resembled Maia Rutledge? Anyone? Tonight we're all exhausted. The whole room is napping. Except for me. Because I still have final work to do, which shocks basically no one.

p.s. I have over 25 apple commands memorized. I counted today. I am so proud of this compromise.
p.p.s. Yes, those are my shoes. I painted out the hearts for the shoot.

Tonight I attended my first art lecture through SCAD and I am so glad I went. The speaker was Spencer Tunick, who I had heard about since due to the bulletins about his lecture posted up around canvas. Spencer Tunick's art is the photography of mass amounts of nude people in public places. It's not pornography, don't get the wrong idea, and don't think one or two naked people prancing in the street. Tunick photographs thousands, hundreds and thousands of posed nude people. The effect is unreal and his lecture was a treat in the sense that he went through about twenty slides of his work and gave background stories and anecdotes. He also showed us seven short documentaries of the actual events and it was absolutely unreal. There is something so striking about watching thousands of people strip down to nothing without the slightest care in the world, walking around completely detatched from self-consciousness and the like. You begin to forget that there's anything wrong at all (which, I suppose in retrospect, there technically isn't in the first place, but, alas, I grew up in America) with public nudity and any expected awkward aspect simply falls away.

It was an experience I won't forget, that's for sure.
