TYPOGRAPHY ACCORDION
I recently got a complaint that while I constantly discuss being an art student, I never share any of my work. This is mostly because I'm still learning, and what might impress my professor may not be that impressive to you guys, simply because it's impossible for you as an audience to judge the growth. However, I realize you can appreciate "the pretty," so to compromise, I'm sharing my latest "pretty" Typography I project (with a bonus at the end). I'm curious to see what you guys have to say, so please discuss!

For this project, we were to "explore the technique of visual storytelling through timing and sequencing of type." We were allowed to depict a poem, speech, short-short story, or song lyrics in 4x4 inch accordion format. The song I chose to illustrate for this project was Glittering Cloud by Imogen Heap (surprise, surprise, I know). We were allowed to use 2-3 typefaces (OldStyle HPCS, Old Typewriter and JaneAusten were used in mine) and two color choices (plus b&w). Outside of the type treatment, there was a major emphasis for this project on paper choice and cover production. We were graded on how well each of the two supported our project in a cohesive manner. Naturally, I immediately shot past my printing abilities and picked a gorgeous gold paper which was nearly impossible to print on in the end. My cover also turned out to be a mini-disaster. Though it looks exactly how I wanted, the covering mesh didn't do it's job holding the glitter in, and I lost a shitload of points due to the messy nature of it. Lesson Learned: Graphic Designers NEVER USE GLITTER. Never again.

also, bonus -

First painting of a diptych I'm doing for the mantel.

Thank you!

It is such nice paper. I fell in love with it.
But unfortunately, it didn't soak up the ink, so the designs smear and rub.

how did you print it?
kades: girl — flare[info]heart_shape on March 6th, 2008 11:11 pm (UTC)
I started off with my inkjet printer at home.
But the one's with heavy black background I printed at Kinko's on the laser printer.
Those came out a bit better.

Thanks!
I've been trying to finish that painting for half a year now (pathetic).
It's nice to see it finally done, ha ha.
How's school going for you?

Lady, you know I've always been beyond amazed with even the stuff you did in high school. Call me an art n00b, or completely biased towards the artist, or whatever you want to say, but your work is always incredibly amazing, in my opinion. I'd love to see your work, even if you don't feel it's impressive for the general public! I'd still like to see what you're up to, if you wouldn't mind occasionally explaining the purpose of some exercises. =)

Anyway, this accordion is really pretty! I love the fonts - they're gorgeous, and really match up with what you were conveying. I love how you can take something generic, that most people find boring (the 'save me,' 'it's all over,' etc), and make it exciting and pretty! What's the one for 'flash', etc? Is that Jane Austen?

that last little painting is so cute! I love the bubbles/dots.

Thaaank youuu. :)

I'll try and make more of an effort to post my projects from now on. I like to document it, even if just for myself. Flash is in JaneAusten, yes. JaneAusten and Violation are probably my favorite script fonts... it seems like no matter what you type in them, it comes out elegant and graceful. And I didn't realize until your comment, but the way I cropped the photo does make that painting look small. It's actually 18x24 inches.

yeah, exactly! It'll be fun at graduation to look at your earlier stuff, and see how much you've changed. Plus, for me at least, it'll be fun to see the different things you had to learn, you know?

I know, JaneAusten and Violation are so pretty. I have to remind myself not to overuse them!

Oh, really? It's still wonderful, though! I love it. =)

ps. wow, I totally missed that paragraph that explained the project - the song, fonts, etc. You probably thought I was such a dork for asking. lmao.

Haha, no. I just figured it was too long and boring to read! ;)

I tend to miss the first bit behind a cut, because i always forget that LJ cuts off that top part. I just assume the first paragraph is the intro.

if that makes sense. xD

FONTS! You know what's funny? I have all those fonts myself. It's so nice to see your art without having to drive up to SCAD myself and dig through your room. It came out gorgeous even thought you had issues with the paper. Beautiful things always have issues. I really liked the fold that has "HURT somebody again" on it. Now I feel the need to go listen to some Heap. Excuse me.

What? You don't want to dig through my room?

You can, you know, since you'll be here in a just one WEEK!
